Harry Potter spoiler alert!!!
Every great story needs a villain, and in Harry Potter series, Voldemort is more than just a dark wizard—he is another example of how even the most feared enemies are shaped by their past.
Lord Voldemort, born Tom Marvolo Riddle, is one of the most complex and feared characters in the Harry Potter series. His past, childhood, and transformation into the Dark Lord play a major role in building his character.
Voldemort's History
Early Origins and Family
Tom Riddle was born on December 31, 1926, to Merope Gaunt and Tom Riddle Sr. Merope Gaunt, Tom’s mother, came from the Gaunt family, direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts. The Gaunt family was known for their obsession with pure-blood wizard supremacy.
Tom Riddle Sr., his father, was a handsome Muggle from a wealthy family. Merope became infatuated with him, but he showed no interest in her. In desperate state, Merope used a love potion to make Tom Sr. fall in love with her, leading to their marriage. When she became pregnant, Merope, in a tragic hope that Tom Riddle Sr. would love her genuinely, stopped giving him the potion. Without its influence, he abandoned her.
Birth and Abandonment
Merope, heartbroken and penniless, gave birth to Tom at an orphanage in London. She died shortly after childbirth, leaving her son without any parental guidance. Tom Riddle Jr. grew up in the Wool's Orphanage, a grim environment devoid of love or comfort. His name, Tom Marvolo Riddle, was a bitter legacy of both his despised Muggle father (Tom Riddle Sr.) and his mother's family (Marvolo Gaunt, his maternal grandfather).
Childhood
Even as a child, Tom showed signs of his dark and manipulative nature. Other children at the orphanage found him strange and scary. He was intelligent, withdrawn, and malicious.
He discovered his magical abilities early, using them to control and terrorize other children in the orphanage. He was known for stealing objects that fascinated him and causing psychological pain on others. He seemed to enjoy causing harm.
Hogwarts Years
At the age of 11, Tom was visited by Albus Dumbledore, who was then a Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts. Dumbledore informed him of his magical heritage and offered him a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
At Hogwarts, Tom excelled academically. He was sorted into Slytherin, like his ancestor Salazar Slytherin. He quickly became a model student, charming his teachers and classmates with his intelligence, good looks and talent.
Although he was charming and a top student, Tom was cold and manipulative, hiding his dark ambitions. He was obsessed with his heritage and sought out the truth about his family. He discovered his connection to Slytherin and developed a deep obsession with purity of blood and immortality.
The Birth of "Lord Voldemort"
Tom Riddle began experimenting with dark magic during his time at Hogwarts. He delved into forbidden knowledge, particularly the concept of Horcruxes—objects used to hide fragments of a wizard's soul, granting them immortality. Tom created his first Horcrux while still a student by murdering Myrtle Warren (known as Moaning Myrtle), splitting his soul and placing part of it in his diary. This was the beginning of his descent into full-fledged evil.
By his sixth year at Hogwarts, Tom no longer wanted to be associated with his Muggle father. He adopted the name "Lord Voldemort", an anagram of "Tom Marvolo Riddle," symbolizing his rejection of his Muggle heritage and his desire to develop a new, fearsome identity.
Post-Hogwarts and Transformation into the Dark Lord
After leaving Hogwarts, Tom worked briefly at Borgin and Burkes, a shop specializing in Dark artifacts. He used this position to gather powerful artifacts, many of which he would later turn into Horcruxes. Around this time, he also tracked down his father and grandparents and murdered them in cold blood, framing his maternal uncle for the crime.
His transformation into Lord Voldemort was complete by this point. Voldemort’s obsession with immortality and power led him to create a total of seven Horcruxes (the diary, Marvolo Gaunt’s ring, Slytherin’s locket, Hufflepuff’s cup, Ravenclaw’s diadem, Nagini the snake, and, unintentionally, Harry Potter himself).
The First Wizarding War
Voldemort emerged as the most powerful Dark wizard of his time, amassing followers known as Death Eaters. He launched a campaign of terror, seeking to purge the wizarding world of Muggles, Muggle-borns, and anyone who opposed him. This era became known as the First Wizarding War. Voldemort sought complete control, both in the magical and non-magical worlds, causing widespread terror and death. Even powerful wizards like Dumbledore struggled to stop him.
The rise of Voldemort paused when, upon hearing a prophecy about a child who could defeat him. Voldemort decided to kill the baby Harry Potter. This decision led to his temporary downfall. When Voldemort attempted to kill Harry, the spell rebounded due to Lily Potter’s (Harry's mother) sacrificial protection, destroying Voldemort’s body and leaving him as a weakened spirit.
Voldemort’s Return
Though severely weakened, Voldemort did not die, thanks to his Horcruxes. He spent over a decade in a formless, half-alive state, relying on others to help him regain strength. During the events of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he regained his physical form with the help of Peter Pettigrew (who had been disguised as Ron's pet rat, Scabbers) and the blood of Harry Potter.
This marked the beginning of the Second Wizarding War, where Voldemort once again sought to dominate the wizarding world. His influence spread far and wide, but ultimately, he was defeated during the Battle of Hogwarts. In the final confrontation, all his Horcruxes had been destroyed, and Harry's willingness to sacrifice himself made Voldemort's killing curse fail. Voldemort died by his own curse, marking the end of his reign of terror.
One doubt that many people have is "what happened to Voldemort's nose?"
Voldemort's physical appearance became a reflection of the dark magic he practiced. His obsession with immortality led him to create Horcruxes, which involved splitting his soul which is against nature. The more he delved into dark magic and sought immortality, the less human he became, both physically and emotionally.
Voldemort’s Tragic Flaws
One of Voldemort's defining characteristics was his inability to love or form genuine connections. This stemmed from the fact that he was conceived under the influence of a love potion, leading to a lifelong incapacity for emotional attachment.
His fear of death drove him to create Horcruxes, hoping to achieve immortality
Voldemort's desire for dominance reflected his view that only through control could he achieve greatness. He saw no value in empathy or vulnerability.
Voldemort's story is one of tragedy. He transformed from a gifted, troubled boy into a feared and hated dark lord, leaving behind a legacy of terror that forever changed the wizarding world.
Once again, it's true—villains aren't born, they are made.
